APSO-lutely Delightful!

The Placement Partner team was well represented at the APSO National Conference which took place earlier this month and, as you can see, we had a ball!

It’s always a treat for us to spend the day networking with like-minded people from the industry but we particularly enjoyed having a chance to catch up with some of you. To those of you who couldn’t make it this year, you were sorely missed, but we always have next year’s conference to look forward to and we’ll gladly fill you in on what happened this year over a cup of coffee.

The energy and overall enthusiasm of the speakers really struck a chord with us this year. It seems everyone is optimistic about the future of the recruitment industry, in spite of the difficulties we face in our economy – It is this enduring positivity and optimism which characterises us as South Africans and really gets us fired up for the future!

Congratulations to our raffle winner!! Thank you to everyone who participated and took part in the fun. Sarah from Resolution Placement Agency is the lucky lady who took home a beautiful Lenovo IdeaPad 120S. Here’s hoping next year, it’ll be you!

Team Parallel’s EA2018 Accomplishment!

This weekend marked the finish of the 2018 Expedition Africa Adventure Race.

Team Parallel finished the brutal 560km course in a time of 125 hours 30 mins, to finish in 17th place of a strong field of 52 teams from 18 countries.

Parallel’s Ronald Jessop shared some of his thoughts with us:

“The race was HARD! Very hard. The 4 of us had trained well and I was surrounded by fit and experienced team-mates, but somehow I still felt out my depth in the early stages of the race as the pace off the start-line was like a park-run, not a 567km monster.

Our coastal run of 20km was followed up by a 50km paddling stage into a head-wind – that stage took us into the night. A quick transition back onto our feet should have made us more comfortable but the navigation on the “Knersvlakte” was difficult – there were not many features we could use to navigate.

By midday the next day we set off on an epic ride of 230km. We opted out of the shortcut bike-carry because we wanted to save our feet, a strategy that paid off in the end. First collecting checkpoints north of Nieuwoudtville, we then cranked south a long, long way through various climatic conditions including some proper rain and mud to finish up at Wupperthal in the Cederberg.

Then a hike up the 2000m mountain of Sneeukop, which we summited at exactly midnight. Another ride, this time 100km northbound along the almost empty Clanwilliam Dam and Olifants River. And then, the crux of the race, a massive hike/scramble/ survival mission of 60km through a bushy canyon that has never seen people before and probably never will again. A very exciting 100m abseil charged us up for a fast last day’s racing, finishing up with a 60km bike ride for a full-course finish in 125.5 hours.

It made a big difference motivationally to know that the real Team Parallel back in the office were keeping an eye on that dot [on the live tracking map] and that we had to keep it moving!”

One of the contestant’s in the race said it very well,

“We do marathons to train for what we do, instead of training for a marathon”

Team Parallel: Expedition Africa 2018

Expedition Africa is part of the The Adventure Racing World Series

This year on the West Coast our Team Parallel will be placed as Team #14!

 

What is Expedition Africa?

Expedition Africa is an adventure racing event that covers over 530kms in a period of up to 1 week.

A total of 52 teams will take part in Expedition Africa Namaqua West Coast this year with teams from countries including the US, UK, Russia, Switzerland, France, Japan and Norway lining up at the start. The ultimate in adventure racing!

  • Adventure racing is a multi-discipline endurance sport where competitors compete in teams, navigating from control point to control point in a number of disciplines.
  • Disciplines include: mountain biking, trekking, kayaking, rope work and orienteering. Teams are expected to navigate using a map and landmarks. Teams must be able to operate in harsh remote environments in all weather conditions.
  • Teams travel through day and night, they can decide if, when and where to rest

This is a gruelling outdoor event and we are so excited to see what happens this year!

“Race village is bustling with excitement as athletes from all over the world gather for this year’s Expedition Africa. Over the past two days, athletes have trickled into Vanrynsdorp, meeting team mates, catching up with foreign friends and essentially reuniting their ‘adventure racing family’.”
